Between Two Lakes

The name is a description: the town lies between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. The Bureau has no amendment to propose. It was entered in 1133 as inter lacus Madon, the house of Augustinian canons that gave the place its name and its first register. The house lasted until 1528 and was then secularised. The name outlived the institution, which the Bureau considers the usual order of events and has ceased to find remarkable.

The badge is drawn, not photographed. Each drawing works from a reference image in the public domain or under a free licence — a photochrom print, a photograph, an etching. Here is the one used for this destination, and why it was chosen.

The drawing follows a photograph of the Bernese Alps taken in 2004. It shows the Eiger-Mönch-Jungfrau trio, plain blue sky behind the whole ridge line, the three summits cleanly separated: the view that makes Interlaken. The band carries 1133, the founding year of the Augustinian priory around which the settlement formed. The name is not a figure of speech: Interlaken reads as between the lakes, and the town does sit between Thun and Brienz. The Bureau has no amendment to propose. The Eiger-Mönch-Jungfrau trio the drawing follows closes the valley to the south; it is that, not the town, which people come to look at.
