Jet d'eau 140 m

The fountain began as a safety valve on the city's hydraulic network and was kept for its appearance. Five hundred litres a second, to a height of a hundred and forty metres. The Bureau approves of works that outlive their purpose. The city entered the Confederation in 1815, long after it had finished being a republic of its own. The register carries the later date because it is the one that can be documented, and notes that Geneva was old before it was Swiss.

The source image

The badge is drawn, not photographed. Each drawing works from a reference image in the public domain or under a free licence — a photochrom print, a photograph, an etching. Here is the one used for this destination, and why it was chosen.

The drawing follows a photograph of the Jet d'Eau taken in May 2024. It shows the column entire, from basin to plume, against open sky, with the lake and the far shore. Without the lake, a lone column of water reads as a palm tree — the Bureau tried it. The jet rises to a hundred and forty metres, the figure printed on the band, and not a hundred and fifty as is often read. It throws five hundred litres a second. It began not as an ornament but as a valve: the city's pressurised water main had to discharge somewhere at the close of day, and the discharge was kept for its looks. The Bureau approves of works that outlive their purpose.
