The Chateau de Chillon appears in a charter of 1150, on a rock in Lake Geneva a short way along the shore. The Bureau files the town under lake stations. The castle was drawing more than a hundred thousand visitors a year by 1939, which the register notes as the earliest figure it holds rather than the highest. It stands on rock, in water, at the foot of a road that has carried traffic since before the charter. The Bureau considers the position well chosen and says so rarely.

The badge is drawn, not photographed. Each drawing works from a reference image in the public domain or under a free licence — a photochrom print, a photograph, an etching. Here is the one used for this destination, and why it was chosen.

The drawing follows a photochrom print published by the Photoglob Co. about 1890-1900, held by the Library of Congress. It shows the Château de Chillon standing on the water, with the Dent du Midi behind: the castle without the mountain would lose its scale. The band carries 1150, the castle's first mention in a charter of Humbert III of Savoy. Chillon is not built on the lakeshore but on a rock rising out of it, joined to the bank by a bridge: it is that islandness, not the architecture, which makes it recognisable. The Dent du Midi closing the background is not scenery: without it the castle would lose its scale and pass for a fortified house.
