Lauterbrunnen — Staubbach 297 m. Vintage travel badge drawn in flat colour, Gazetteer Bureau.

Lauterbrunnen

Staubbach 297 m

The Staubbach falls 297 metres down a sheer wall, and in dry weather reaches the valley floor as mist. The Bureau gazettes it as a waterfall regardless. The valley is first entered in writing in 1240 as in claro fonte, a description rather than a name; Luterbrunnen follows in 1304. The Bureau prefers the earlier form, which says what is there. The Staubbach is the highest free-falling fall in the country; the Murrenbach, close by, is the highest of any kind at 417 metres. The register prints both and lets the distinction stand.

The source image

The badge is drawn, not photographed. Each drawing works from a reference image in the public domain or under a free licence — a photochrom print, a photograph, an etching. Here is the one used for this destination, and why it was chosen.

The drawing follows a photomechanical print held by the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam under the shelf mark RP-F-F01156-DC. It brings together two features that nothing else brings together: the vertical wall of the valley and the Staubbach fall. The band carries 297 metres for the Staubbach. In dry weather the fall comes apart before the ground and reaches the valley only as mist: the Bureau gazettes it as a waterfall regardless, the height being that of the drop and not of the water that arrives. The vertical wall must stay in frame, failing which the thread reads as mere seepage and the figure becomes implausible.
