The village admits no combustion engines. Visitors leave their cars at Tasch and complete the journey by rail. The Bureau considers the arrangement exemplary and has recommended it elsewhere, without success. The place is first recorded in 1280 under the name Pratabornum, which it has since abandoned. Above it stands the Matterhorn at 4478 metres, drawn on the badge from the Stafelalp side, where the summit ridge leans right and the pyramid stands clear of its neighbours. The Bureau holds that a mountain is identified by its profile and not by its altitude, which many share.

The drawing follows a photograph of the Matterhorn taken from the Stafelalp. It was chosen for one reason: the sky behind the whole silhouette is plain, the pyramid is visible from summit to foot, and the ridges stay sharp. The photograph tried before it lost the ridge in cloud and backlight. The band carries 1280, the village's first mention under the name Pratabornum, and 4478 m for the Matterhorn. The date is often confused with 1865, the year of the first ascent: that is not a founding, and the Bureau holds to the distinction. The summit ridge leans right and the left flank is the steeper: it is that imbalance, measurable on the photograph, which forbids taking the Matterhorn for any pyramid at all.
