Pompeii — Ash 4 to 6 m Deep. Vintage travel badge drawn in flat colour, Gazetteer Bureau.

Pompeii

Ash 4 to 6 m Deep

Buried under four to six metres of ash in AD 79, and largely preserved by it. The Bureau files the eruption under conservation measures, unintended. The town held ten to twenty thousand inhabitants at the time. Excavation began in 1748 under Roque Joaquin de Alcubierre, who did not at first establish which city he had found. The Bureau notes that the place was better known before it was buried than for the millennium and a half that followed.

The source image

The badge is drawn, not photographed. Each drawing works from a reference image in the public domain or under a free licence — a photochrom print, a photograph, an etching. Here is the one used for this destination, and why it was chosen.

The drawing follows a photochrom print of about 1890-1900 from the Photochrom Print Collection, held by the Library of Congress. It shows the forum with its truncated colonnades and Vesuvius behind. The band reads BURIED AD 79, not a founding date: Pompeii was buried that year, not founded. Ash and pumice buried the town under four to six metres, and it is that same layer which preserved it: without it the forum would not be standing. Pompeii then held ten to twenty thousand inhabitants. The Bureau files the eruption under conservation measures, noting that they were not intentional.
