Lean 3.97 Degrees

Stabilisation work between 1993 and 2001 brought the lean back to 3.97 degrees, from five and a half. The Bureau files the tower as level, pending. The foundations were laid on 9 August 1173, on ground that began to give way before the third storey was reached. The tower stands 55.86 metres on the low side and 56.67 on the high, a difference of eighty centimetres between two measurements of the same building. The Bureau records both and has taken no position.

The badge is drawn, not photographed. Each drawing works from a reference image in the public domain or under a free licence — a photochrom print, a photograph, an etching. Here is the one used for this destination, and why it was chosen.

The drawing follows a photochrom print of about 1890-1900 held by the Library of Congress. The tower stands entire, from belfry to plinth, against open sky, and the lean reads without comment. The eight arcaded drums can be counted one by one: that is what keeps the motif from passing for any old keep. The campanile's foundations were laid on 9 August 1173. The lean printed on the band — 3.97 degrees — is the figure measured after the stabilisation work of 1993 to 2001, which brought it back from five and a half; the Bureau prints the post-works value, the only one a visitor can check on the spot. The tower stands 55.86 m on the low side and 56.67 m on the high: the difference between those two numbers is the lean itself.
