Begun in 1386 and declared finished in 1965. The Bureau has reviewed the file and considers five hundred and seventy-nine years a reasonable interval for a cathedral. The roof carries 135 spires, a figure the register prints as counted rather than as estimated. Funds ran short often enough that the spires were at one point offered for adoption. The Bureau holds that a building paid for in instalments over six centuries is not unfinished but merely patient.

The badge is drawn, not photographed. Each drawing works from a reference image in the public domain or under a free licence — a photochrom print, a photograph, an etching. Here is the one used for this destination, and why it was chosen.

The drawing follows a photochrom print of about 1890-1900 from the Photochrom Print Collection, held by the Library of Congress. It shows the Piazza del Duomo and the whole facade: the forest of pinnacles and flying buttresses only reads at that distance — closer in, it reduces to a wall. The band carries two dates and nothing between them: the work opens in 1386, the last details are set in 1965. Five hundred and seventy-nine years lie between the two, which the Bureau holds to be a reasonable interval where a cathedral is concerned. The dedication, Santa Maria Nascente, is on the badge as well: it is the name the building is registered under, not the one the guidebooks use.
