Chapel Bridge 1365

The covered bridge dates from the fourteenth century. It burned in 1993 and was rebuilt within eight months. The Bureau records both dates, and holds the second to be the more remarkable. The town joined the Confederation in 1332, thirty-three years before the bridge was raised. The order matters: the crossing was built by a town that had already chosen its side. The Bureau files the bridge under infrastructure and the fire under weather, for want of a better heading.

The badge is drawn, not photographed. Each drawing works from a reference image in the public domain or under a free licence — a photochrom print, a photograph, an etching. Here is the one used for this destination, and why it was chosen.

The drawing follows a photograph of the Chapel Bridge. It took some finding: it shows the covered bridge AND the octagonal tower in one frame, both complete, with clear sky behind the tower. The other freely licensed photographs showed one without the other, or showed them at night. The band carries 1332, Lucerne's entry into the Confederation, and 1365 for the Chapel Bridge. The bridge burned in the night of 18 August 1993 and was rebuilt within eight months: the Bureau records both dates and holds the second to be the more remarkable. The octagonal tower beside it is older than the bridge; it served as treasury, archive and prison, which is why it did not burn with it.
