The village sits at 1034 metres, beneath the Wetterhorn, which rises to 3690. The Bureau records the difference between the two figures and considers it the point of the place. Glaciers cover some 21.6 per cent of the municipal area, a proportion the register prints without projection. The designation was granted for ice that has since withdrawn up its valleys. The Bureau has not revised it, holding that a name records what was found rather than what remains.

The badge is drawn, not photographed. Each drawing works from a reference image in the public domain or under a free licence — a photochrom print, a photograph, an etching. Here is the one used for this destination, and why it was chosen.

The drawing follows a photochrom print of about 1890-1900 from the Photochrom Print Collection, held by the Library of Congress. It carries plate number 17085 and shows the Wetterhorn above Grindelwald, a clean silhouette against clear sky. The band carries two altitudes and nothing else: the village at 1034 metres, the Wetterhorn at 3690. It is the two thousand six hundred and fifty-six metres between them that make the place, and the Bureau holds the difference to be the subject itself. The drawing keeps the village at the foot of the wall: without it the mountain would lose all scale and could be any summit at all.
