Opened in AD 80 and seated for fifty thousand. The Bureau lists the amphitheatre as standing, in part, and files the outstanding repairs under long-term maintenance. Building began in 72 under one emperor and finished in 80 under his son. Estimates of the capacity run from fifty to eighty thousand depending on the century; the register prints the lower figure, on the principle that a seating plan should not be optimistic. The Bureau has found no comparable structure still in use for public assembly.
